Standardization and bioavailability of Ayurvedic drug Lauha bhasma- part -II comparative bioavailability studies P.R.P. Verma, CM Prasad October-December 1995, 15(2):140-144After analyzing the Lauha Bhasma samples qualitatively and quantitatively, in-vivo studies on healthy adult male rabbits were carried out. Randomly selected anaemic rabbits were divided into different groups and three variants of Lauha Bhasma and ferrous sulphate sample were administered to each group. The effect of each formulation was monitored by measuring the haemoglobin (Hb) content spectrophotometrically (cyanomethaemoglobin method). Increase in the haemoglobin content was found to be significant in case of the ayurvedic formulations as compared to the ferrous sulphate sample.

An in vitro study on the antimicrobial effect of select heterocyclic nitrogen compounds Y.S.R. Reddy, Sama Venkatesh, Uma Shankar Misra, B Suresh, Md Afzal Azam, M Sethuraman October-December 1995, 15(2):137-139In vitro antimicrobial activity of seventeen heterocyclic nitrogen compounds {2substituted pyrido [1,2-a] pyrimidin -4-oxo-1 [4]-3-Carbonitriles and ethyl 5-amino-3(substituted) - pyrazole-3-Carboxylates} was tested against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and candida albicans strains, Antimicrobial activity was measured using standard two -fold serial dilution method and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values are determined, The MIC of pyrazoles and pyrido[1,2 -a] pyrimidines are found to be 25 μg/ml to 50 μg/ml against E. Coli and 50 μg/ml against B.subtilis respectively. Both pyrazole and pyrido [1,2-a] Pyrimidines are found to be totally ineffective against C. albicans.

Identity of Mollugo stricta roots: A postential antifertility drug for future P Padma, RL Khosa October-December 1995, 15(2):97-101The salient diagnostic pharmacognostical characters of the roots of Mollugo strica which sows promise as an antifertility drug for future have been studied. The young root is di-to-tri-arch, diarch conditions being most common. The cork cambium arises in the outermost layer of cortex forming 2-3 layers of cork cells on the outside and phelloderm towards the innerside. In the nature root, two concentric stellar rings are formed around the central was the inner one being continuous where as the outer one is discontinuous. The central core of wood also show delignificant in the advanced stages. Starch and calcium oxalate are absent. Ash values and fluorescence analysis are also determined.

Standardization and bioavailabililty of Ayurvedic drug Lauha bhasma part-1 physical and chemicla evaluation P.R.P Verma, Prasad October-December 1995, 15(2):129-136Lauha Bhasma, an ayurvedic drug, is widely used in iron deficiency anaemia, this ancient drug is claimed to be better absorbed gastrointestinally, and is also claimed to be devoid of the usual side effects associated with administration of the allopathic iron preparations, Physical and chemical methods of standardization required for any quality preparation, is not found in the ayurvedic and the modern literatures for Lauha Bhasma. Thus an approach has been made to standardize Lauha Bhasma. For the purpose of analysis, samples of all the three commonly available variants of Lauha Bhasma were considered. Qualitative analysis indicates the presence of iron both in the ferric and the ferrous forms, A simple spectrophotometric method has been used for simultaneous determination of ferric ferrous and the total iron content in a single aliquot.

Effect of short duration caffeine treatment on the jejunum of adult Albino rats R Pushpalatha, K Sri Tulasi, G Vanithakumari October-December 1995, 15(2):110-114The effect of the short duration (21 days) of caffeine at two different doses (12 mg & 30 mg/kg body weight/day) on the activities of adenosine triphosphatases in jejunum was studied. The activity of Na+, K+ -dependent ATP-ase was reduced significantly in the upper jejunal mucosal and serosal layers of low an high dose groups. Such effect was observed only in the lower jejunal serosal layer while a marked reduction in the activity of Mg2+ATP -ase was seen in mucosal and serosal layers of the jejunum at both doses. There was a significant increase in the activities of Ca2+-dependent and HCO3-dependent ATP -ases in these regions of the lower jejunum.
