The antipyretic activity of a herbal formulation, TBR-002 was compared with that of andrographis paniculata, andrographis elongate and paracetamol in yeast-induced pyrexia in male albino rats, TBR-oo2 was found to be effective at an oral dose of 100 mg/kg in the inhibition if pyrexia. Its efficacy was almost comparable to that of paracetamol as well as andrographis elongate, the antipyretic activity of andrographis paniculata, the well known antipyretic herb, was found to be less than that of the above drugs.

Inula racemosa and Saussurea lappa have been used in ayurvedic system for the management of diabetes. The result of this communication concludes that I. racemosa reduces the blood glucose earlier as compared to S. lappa. Maximum response in case of I. racemosa is noted between 2 to 4 hours after drug administration while for S. lappa while for S. lappa, it is 4 to 8 hours. S. lappa can be used as substitute for I. racemosa for the management of diabetes, but it should not be taken for granted that this substitution should be applicable to all other systems, where I. racemosa has been recommended as a drug of choice.

Ayurveda recommends many simple herbs in the treatment of urological afflictions like urolithiasis. Seventyone patients diagnosed to be suffering from urolithiasis were treated with juice of the core of the pseudostem of Musa Paradisiaca and Musa sapientum. A significant segment of them passed out calculi of varying size after consuming the drug for two weeks. Recurrence of stone formation was also prevented by the treatment, The author concludes that the plant material is quite effective in curing urolithiasis, especially of the calcium oxalate variety.

Methods were evolved for the detection of Curcuma longa in ayurvedic preparations. A simple method was also found out for the estimation of Curcuma longa in Vachalasunyadhi Taila using the formula -a = b/.32. Where a is the actual weight of Curcuma longa in Vilupatra Tailam and b is the weight obtained from graph of concentration of Curcuma longa VS OD. The methods evolved are so simple that it does not require any sophisticated instruments and hence it can be carried out in any quality control lab.

Many diseases are being spread in the word by micro organisms. This necessitates the development of cost effective and easily available antimicrobial medicines. Plants have generally been source of alkaloids, steroids, terpenoids, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins, glycosides and various pigments. The chemical exploitation of varieties of indigenous plants is therefore likely to offer a cost effective treatment for many diseases leading to the development of the nation and welfare of the society. The present communication reports that hydrocarbons, triterpenes and phytosterols present in Alstonia scholaris, are responsible for its medicinal value.
