Wagatea spicata Dalzell, family : Leguminosae (Caesalpiniaceae) known in vernacular as 'Vagati" or "Vakeri", is a montotypic genus of a robust woody, climbing shrub growing abundantly in Maharashtra State, especially in Konkan jungles and on the Ghats near Mahabaleshwar. The roots are known to be used in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis and pneumonia since long in the Indian system of medicine. The bark is used for skin diseases. The seeds possess an oil which is sometimes used for lighting purposes. Since the plant is abundantly used in Indian system of Medicine the authors carried out pharmacognostic studies on its parts in order to find out adulterations, if any, which is presented here.

In basic Ayurveda texts, Susruta, Caraka and Vagbhata, some quite specific Salts (Lavanam) have been described and their properties and actions are enumerated. By comparing those accounts with the present methods of preparation, conclusions have been made and evidently spurious methods are pointed out. The reported properties of Saindhava, Samudra, Vida, Sauvarcha, Romaka, Audbhida, Gutika, the Katu Group, Krsna and Pamsuja Lavanas are discussed in terms of their chemical constituents here and, thus, the authors establish its inter-connections.

Betel nuts prematurely harvested and allowed to dry in heaps contain moisture which permits Aspergillus flavous to enter and spread over the central portions. Such betel - nuts consumed with betel leaves can cause cancer of the mouth since A. flavus is a carcinogen. Samples collected showed that the most betel - nuts were contaminated.
