The author discusses here the efforts made to revive Ayurveda in the twentieth century by the protagonists of Ayurveda during the national movement and appraises how far political support and State patronage did good for the recrudescence of Ayurveda.

This study is aimed at evaluating the efficacy of the Ayurvedic system, especially for chronic diseases. Assessment of the subjective relief feed back was done on the lines as suggested in Caraka Samhita, one of the oldest classical Ayurvedic texts. An inter-disciplinary research work involving ancient medical learning and hi-tech modern electronic data processing unit evaluate the efficacy of the Ayurvedic treatment in a closed community. 80 percent of the respondents were in the relief range of 75% to 100%, while overall relief in terms of regaining positive health in addition to attending complaint relief is over 70% in all diseases groups, as reported by the respondents in this Programme.

The non-availability of health care in the rural area leads to the problems like infant mortality, infectious disease deaths and malnutrition. Rural health can be promoted both at preventive and promotive levels through non-formal education.

The ayurvedic pharmacy needs to be established on the basis of modern quality standards. A study on ayurvedic Guti-Vati (tablets) was undertaken with this view, revealed that most of the tablets conform to the I P standards for hardness and DT. A few of the tablets showed curious responses similar to that of enteric coated and slow release tablets commonly used in modern medicine.

Increased serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were reduced by 38 - 41.7% and 48 - 53.3% respectively when fed with alfalfa seed extract from the beginning or in established hyperlipidaemic model. LDL-cholesterol lowering was maximum (64.4%) in a model fed with alfalfa meals without cholesterol. An increase in HDL- cholesterol total cholesterol is suggestive of beneficial role since it is associated with low incidence of atherosclerosis. Possible mechanism of lipid lowering activity of Medicago sativa seed extract is worked out.

Two ayurvedic preparations Arogya Vardhini Bati (AVB) and Anand Bhairava Ras (ABR) were found to cure intestinal amoebiasis of rat and hepatic amoebiasis of golden hamster. Both AVB and ABR were found to be amoebicidal against trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytic at 500 μg/ml in vitro and cured caecal amoebiasis of rat at 200 mg/kg/dose/5 dyas, in vivo.

Irradiation of sterilized aqueous solution of ammonium formate and ammonia with UV light in the presence and or absence of certain inorganic sensitizers for 25 hrs. gave six ninhydrin positive products in appreciable amounts. Out of the six products observed fiver were characterized as lysine, serine, glutemic acid, n-amino butyric acid and leucine. The sensitizing effect of additives on ammonium formate was observed in the order; uranium oxide > ammonium formate > ferric oxide > arsenic oxide.
