Sir,
The report on anti-acne activity of Darchini and Tukhm Khashkhash by Chaudhary et al. is interesting. [1] Chaudhary et al. concluded that "Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Papaver. somniferum have potential against acne causing bacteria and hence they can be used in topical anti-acne preparations and may address the antibiotic resistance of the bacteria." [1] In fact, the antibacterial activity of Darchini and Tukhm Khashkhash can be concluded from this study. However, it might not be possible to conclude favorably for its anti-acne property. It should be noted that antibiotics are not routinely used for management of acne. [2] Antibiotics are indicated only in cases where there are confirmed superimposed bacterial infections of acne. [2] Furthermore, as Chaudhary et al. noted, the use of any antibacterial agent without indication can result in drug resistance. [1] Finally, the problem of possible allergic reaction to P. somniferum should be kept in mind. There is evidence to suggest that P. somniferum can induce allergic asthma. [3]
